The ghost of Christmas past from the future

The other day, in true holiday spirit, [livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces and I were discussing the issue of naglaeria amoeba infesting Neti pots, and we had this delightful conversation.

[livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces: When the egg comes a-nogging, don't go... toboggan
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: *laughs*
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: ...mmmm nog.
[livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces: I don't fully know what it is
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: I have no idea what it is. But I like it.
[livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces: IT'S AMOEBAE
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: IT IS NOT D:
[livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces: IT IS
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: WHYYYYY
[livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces: SCIENCE
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: Science is fucking up my Christmas.
[livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces: You said you enjoyed Christmas amoebae!
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: Well...yes...but...
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate:...but...
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: They didn't say they were going to get into my eggnog! D:
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: I imagine going home and finding a Christmas amoeba soaking in a mug of eggnog on my coffee table.
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: Just like "hi there. >) "
[livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces: *texts Kat*
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: OH NOOO
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: THE EGGNOG WOULD BE ALL AMOEBIC
[livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces: it's okay, I don't have her phone number, hahahaha
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: THE AMOEBA WOULD BE ALL NOGGY
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: The sad part is I can also see myself sucking nog off a fuzzy amoeba.
[livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces: I can too
[livejournal.com profile] maypirate: I'm not sure what this says about me.
[livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces: You like nogmoeba

And lo, it was decreed.

Amoebas. (Green Amboeba appears courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces herself)

Proceed into the depths of holiday spirit to experience the Amoebanog process! )

Delicious. Also I'm pretty.

In conclusion, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukkah, Krazy Kwanzaa, and Tip-Top Tet. Or if none of those are good for you? Just have an awesome day.

Can you stop for a second, I have to dance

So I posted two days in a row then failed for a week. Heyoooo my life. As usual, I'm not moving to Dreamwidth. One of these days I may get an account there, but I will likely be here until the ship sinks, and then I'll live on the ocean floor for a while. Because that's how I am.

Anyway. HAPPY CHANUKKAH TO THOSE SO INCLINED. I've successfully lit the candles with my parents twice this week. I'm rocking it this year.

Last Saturday I drove down to see [livejournal.com profile] timbean one more time, and we ended up eating twice at "Full Moon Restaurant," my new favorite restaurant in the world. It's everything you've ever wanted in a diner and more. I have pictures on my phone that will hopefully appear after the holidays, which I'm working. Well, not tomorrow, because I traded with Richard so I could go see "Adventures of Tintin" with my parents, [livejournal.com profile] infinityduck and Megan and her husband. I've heard some glowing reviews of it, and I'm pretty excited.

Also thank you so much to the people who sent me cards even though I didn't get my own post up in time. Actually, speaking of that post...

CARD POST TIME IS NOW. So yes, they'll be more like exciting midwinter cards! DO YOU WANT AN EXCITING MIDWINTER CARD PLEASE? Leave your address (comments are screened, but also feel free to PM me if you feel safe about that) and I will get off my butt and make it happen this year.

LET ME LOVE YOU

The Storage Lockers of Dr. Caligari

Look at me posting two days in a row, I am on my high horse yes indeed.

Yesterday I kind of failed at, in all kinds of stupid ways. But I did call MG&E and confirmed that the endless sulfur smell is not a gas leak. But uh...whatever it is, they couldn't fix it, so...yeah. I have a "cinnamon sugar" scented candle to keep me company. It helps a little.

Tonight I plan to apply to a coffee shop that pays $3 more an hour and have benefits. Please cross your fingers or some sticks for me. ;_;

And I got a letter from my host dad, which was awesome, especially since I didn't get one last year and therefore worried he was dead. While he did not include any pictures of himself alone not smiling, he did send pictures of random trees, tell me he went to Croatia, and asked that in 2012 we exchange letters. I've been starting to compose one in my head because I owe him about 7 years of information. But yay, my legendary host dad! I'm so glad he's doing well.

Also here's a meme that I saw on tumblr, but I stole its LJ-state from [livejournal.com profile] eonism:

Comment with a ship for my sexual headcanons and I will tell you:

what was their first kiss like
where were they their first time having sex
who’s louder
who wakes up first
favorite form of foreplay
who performs/receives oral more often
what kink they most often use
who more often tries new things
if they had to choose a third+ person to include who would it be
favorite toy
is there a certain thing one of them can’t have sex without
their general feelings on sex in the relationship
how careful are they about using protection
a fantasy of one that the other will never be able/willing to fulfill

So...y'all generally know how I swing with these things. >.>

Anyway. I need to go locate our missing "Fright Night" disc. Dammit people.

Mark to market

AND SO YOU SEE.

I have finally finished the Loki doll I was working on for [livejournal.com profile] jou, and because he's probably my most fabulous creation to date I present him now under this exciting cut! )

And now I have some questions for you all! I'd like to open my etsy shop and start taking doll commissions, but I'm very bad at pricing my goods, so I wanted to offer this poll. If you could just take a moment to throw in your input, that would be awesome.

Put grass in straws. JUST DO IT.

OH LJ, I HAVE NOT FORSAKEN YOU!

I just seem to have an endless supply of not free time and forgetting, which is pretty standard for me. I also have pictures I need to resize and upload and then I get overwhelmed at that small act because it reminds me of all the other things I need to do and everything is madness all the time.

So here are some points of interest:

-Last Saturday I went to a craft/fine art fair with my mom, then we went to Perkins, where I had breakfast/lunch consisting of a slice of French Silk Pie with a side of bacon. Because I am a classy lady.
-MY JOB. AAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Ugh. My boss has acquired several new titles: "the thing in the basement," "It," and as a result of the previous one, "Pennywise," since she's always downstairs and "they all float down there. Theoretically I might get a raise for the first time in two years. Yeah. I'll believe it when I see it.
-[livejournal.com profile] monkeybobert moved back and we've already gone to yoga together and it is beautiful and amazing.
-[livejournal.com profile] caffeaffogato, however, is moving away in January, which is not beautiful and makes me tremendously sad.
-On Thanksgiving, I noticed Nicky might have the beginning of a UTI, so off she went to the vet, where she got antibiotics, and was a very good girl about taking them even though I'm sure it was the last thing she wanted to do.
-Watched the "Thor" rifftrax, which was incredibly pleasing, especially the end credits. I always forget what Tom Hiddleston actually looks/sounds like until I watch it and then I go "Oh. Huh. He's more appealing than I remembered."
-Speaking of Thor and such, I finished a Loki doll for [livejournal.com profile] jou and it may be the best thing I've done to date (except for one thing that I see as a huge glaring flaw but apparently no one else notices? whatever). I plan to post pictures shortly, and hopefully get some input on pricing so I can set up COMMISSIONS!!! (Commissionsssss)
-I wish I could buy everyone all the gifts, but I just don't have the money. Hence the hope for commissions.
-Last weekend was the one year anniversary of the car accident that destroyed the Mach 19. I avoided the intersection where it happened for the most part and no one ran any red lights at me.
-I AM GOING TO MAKE A WINTERTIME CARD POST. It just...um...you know, will be late. Like always.

It's finally gotten pretty cold, but it has yet to snow. I can't really complain today, though, because the sky is so blue and it's just lovely out. If only I hadn't forgotten my scarf. How did I even do that.

"Enjoy those tacos now, for in 1000 years they will be illegal... Hahaha! I think we all know why."

One of these days... a real entry. I promise. I just have spent most of the past week since posting my STBB in a kind of "I don't have to worry about my STBB" haze and also working and sleeping and being a bum. And not uploading the pictures of cupcakes I mean to bombard everyone with.

It's Thanksgiving, and I'm at work, which is okay generally, because all I really do on Thanksgiving is watch X-Files and I can do that here. I mean, yes, it's obnoxious as hell that we're the only thing open aside from Starbinx, and it'll probably get busy later as people become less and less able to deal with their families, but for now, I'm good.

And of course, this year, as ever, I'm thankful for my family and my friends (including all of y'allz), for being there for me and just being in my life in general. I might want some kind of magical hovering toaster to grant all my wishes, but in reality, I couldn't ask for any better people to share my life with.

...okay and I'm also grateful for people who dress up their guinea pigs in festive costumes.

Happy Thanksgiving or Thursday or whatever day you'd like. <3

Signal boost: Save the Internet. It's kind of a big deal.

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] nyxmidnight at Save the Internet. It's kind of a big deal.

PROTECT IP Act Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.

BoingBoing.Net -- The MPAA, RIAA, Hollywood knows that they have been flying in CEOs of as many companies as possible, recruiting people to get petition signups at malls in California, and here's the big point-- they know they have gotten their message through to Congress -- the worst bill in Internet history, the one where government and their corporations get unbelievable power to take down sites, threaten payment processors into stopping payment to sites on a blacklist, and throw people in jail for posting ordinary content is about to pass before the end of this year. The only thing that is going to stop Hollywood from owning the Internet and everything we do, is if there is a big surprise Internet backlash starting right now.

PROTECT IP (S. 968)/SOPA (HR. 3261) creates the first system for Internet censorship - this bill has sweeping provisions that give the government and corporations leeway and legal cover for taking down sites "by accident," mistakenly, or for NOT doing "enough" to protect the interests of Hollywood. These bills that are moving very quickly through Congress and can pass before Christmas aim to give the US government and corporations the ability to block sites over infringing links posted by their users and give ISPs the release to take any means to block peoples' sites, including slowing down your connection. That's right, some say this bill is a workaround to net neutrality and is bigger than net neutrality.

This is the worst piece of Internet legislation in history - the lawmakers who have been sponsoring (Leahy, Lamar Smith, Conyers) this bill need to be shamed by the Internet community for wasting taxpayer dollars on a bill that would break the very fabric of the Internet, create an Internet blacklist, kill jobs and great startup companies, huge blogs, and social networks.

How this affects you, personally:

EFF.org -- Let’s make one thing clear from the get-go: despite all the talk about this bill being directed only toward “rogue” foreign sites, there is no question that it targets US companies as well. The bill sets up a system to punish sites allegedly “dedicated to the theft of US property.” How do you get that label? Doesn’t take much: Some portion of your site (even a single page) must
  1. be directed toward the US, and either
  2. allegedly “engage in, enable or facilitate” infringement or
  3. allegedly be taking or have taken steps to “avoid confirming a high probability” of infringement.

If an IP rightsholder (vaguely defined – could be Justin Bieber worried about his publicity rights) thinks you meet the criteria and that it is in some way harmed, it can send a notice claiming as much to the payment processors (Visa, Mastercard, Paypal etc.) and ad services you rely on.

Once they get it, they have 5 days to choke off your financial support. Of course, the payment processors and ad networks won’t be able to fine-tune their response so that only the allegedly infringing portion of your site is affected, which means your whole site will be under assault. And, it makes no difference that no judge has found you guilty of anything or that the DMCA safe harbors would shelter your conduct if the matter ever went to court. Indeed, services that have been specifically found legal, like Rapidshare, could be economically strangled via SOPA. You can file a counter-notice, but you’ve only got 5 days to do it (good luck getting solid legal advice in time) and the payment processors and ad networks have no obligation to respect it in any event. That’s because there are vigilante provisions that grant them immunity for choking off a site if they have a “reasonable belief” that some portion of the site enables infringement.

At a minimum, this means that any service that hosts user generated content is going to be under enormous pressure to actively monitor and filter that content. That’s a huge burden, and worse for services that are just getting started – the YouTubes of tomorrow that are generating jobs today. And no matter what they do, we’re going to see a flurry of notices anyway – as we’ve learned from the DMCA takedown process, content owners are more than happy to send bogus complaints. What happened to Wikileaks via voluntary censorshipStop the Internet Blacklist Legislation will now be systematized and streamlined – as long as someone, somewhere, thinks they’ve got an IP right that’s being harmed.

Stop the Internet Blacklist Legislation

Fic: If You Need Another Dying Wish

Normally I don't post anything fic-related here, and I probably won't again, but this is kind of a huge deal for me and there's art and music and I just have to share it.

Title: If You Need Another Dying Wish
Author: [livejournal.com profile] maypirate (posted at my writing LJ, [livejournal.com profile] ohno_fairies)
Artist: [livejournal.com profile] alaria
Mixer: [livejournal.com profile] peculiaritea
Series: (ST XI, TNG, DS9, etc) ST XI
Character/Pairing(s): Kirk/McCoy, Kirk/Sulu, McCoy/Spock
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 39,560
Warnings: (if applicable) Semi-graphic sex, possible abuse of Starfleet quaratine policies
Summary: Entry for [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang. A follow up to "Gravity (No Escaping)". As he considers taking his relationship with McCoy to the next level, Jim Kirk touches the wrong alien tree, and ends up bonded to his helmsman. Physically, that is. Unable to move more than five feet away from each other, Jim and Sulu have to come to terms with their friendship, their relationships, and each other. It should be easy enough, and Jim is sure he knows who he is and who he wants. Too bad Sulu seems to have his own ideas about the situation, and they don't necessarily align.

Lost her job on Pettycoat Junction

Slow me has been slow and distracted by everything and it's cousin. I'd like to write about my amazing and entirely too short five days off (which was really more like three days off, honestly), but I want to add pictures which means getting them off my camera, resizing them, uploading them, arglebargle life is hard or something. The short version is YAY I WASN'T AT WORK, I saw [livejournal.com profile] timbean, I mailed awful pastries across England, my car didn't start and my phone wouldn't work simultaneously, I wrote things somehow, and I bought some new pants. There was also the most amazing cupcake of my life, but that really does need pictures.

I've also been alternately working on/being afraid of my STBB. I finished the rough draft on Friday, and the posting date is tomorrow, and last night I decided to have an epic terrible breakdown over some beta-related stuff and decide I'd written a story that ate up a year and a half of my creative heart entirely wrong. So that was cool.

I'd like to think that today I'm in a better position to deal with it, and hopefully I can make some fixes without any more useless crying get it together Amber because tomorrow we go live.

And after that, things should resume as normal, and pictures will be posted. For now, here are some pigfeets:

Some kind of gauzy fruitcake

I don't know where my weekend went.

I mean, I kind of know, but it was there and then it was gone. But that's okay, because I cleaned and watched "Law and Order: SVU" and finished up five dolls and I only have to work two days this week and then I'm free to roll around on the floor giggling crazily too myself about how my boss has to actually do her damn job aaaahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Have this picture of me lying on top of the DVD drawers at work.

I like it up there. Please also enjoy the posters behind me. They are, from the far end, a peace sign with condoms on the fingers, two gay men wrapped in an American flag and supporting condom usage, and "Metropolis." These are the signatures of my store, and may give you a glimpse, for a moment, of why the entity of the store itself is meaningful to me.

Also weird.

Anyway, here are some of the dolls I finished this weekend:

Standing up properly was never an option. )

I also did two Spock, and they have clothes this time! I'll take pictures of those later.

When I came into work today, the store smelled like egg rolls thanks to the cheap Chinese place next door. I have never been as unthrilled by the scent of egg rolls before. Yargh.

Sack of monkeys in my pocket

I still have treats to dispense, but don't worry, I haven't forgotten!

I did forget to mention the results of the COOOOOORN MAAAAAZE which were that I went into a strange "my dad" mode and was like "I WILL LEAD THE WAY" and for the most part I did, with some assistance from [livejournal.com profile] infinityduck and [livejournal.com profile] latenightarting. I felt terribly accomplished when we made it out.

But I kind of have to talk about work for a moment, and for once it's sort of hilarious.

My boss, Michigan J. Frog. )

And in conclusion, I have a "staycation" next week and I will get shit done. Hopefully.

Now here is a meme from [livejournal.com profile] thistlerose:

When you get to my door, tell them Boris sent you

I'm dressed up for Halloween for the first time in many years! I went to a costume shop with [livejournal.com profile] feels_like_fire on Saturday and found something in the half-price area to make a simple kind of Elizabeth Bathory costume. I will hopefully find someone to take decent pictures of me later.

[livejournal.com profile] jactrades appraised me of this meme, and so in a festive spirit, I shall do it:

In honor of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door'.

Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and I'll give you a treat. Treats can be anything that strikes my fancy (pics of fave actors or pairings, one sentence fics, graphics, a few words why I'm glad to have you on my flist, etc. etc.). The more "houses" to visit the more fun it'll be, so go ahead, open your journal and help spread the fun!

Condos scare millions of people every day

The week, it passes. I've been living in my new sweatshirt/jacket/fuzzfarm every day and it hasn't gotten old yet. I feel super fancy.

Apparently in transit to the new space we lost/misplaced/got rid of the store's microwave, so every time I need to reheat my rice-with-stuff-on-it based lunches I have to go upstairs to the coffee shop and ask to use theirs. And granted I spend a lot of money there, but I still feel bad and I wish we could have nice things but we can't have nice things.

Tomorrow night is "Freak Fest" downtown, which means I will be as far from there as possible. We're actually closing the store early (since we're withing the party perimeter and don't want to deal with masses of drunks), and my boss had illusions of people coming in and working to unpack some of the stuff we still have left, but to that I say "HA!" Ha. Ain't no way.

Remember those memes I said I had stacked up? Here's another one, from the delightful [livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces:

1. Reply to this post and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Behold my delicious icon world. )

Aaaaand yeah. Punchspiration and cookie party with [livejournal.com profile] sail_aweigh resulted in about 4000 words but there's still more to go than I anticipated, and tonight I am going to a COOOOORN MAAAAAZE, which I did last year, but this time it will be in the dark and I may never be seen again. I'll keep people posted.

I love you sweatshirt

I found this quiz on tumblr and how could I not take it?

YES. I AM EVERYTHING I EVER WANTED TO BE AND I HAVE PERFECT HAIR FOREVER (assuming a contingency of seasons 4-7 of course).

In other news, there is no news. I spent the weekend not really doing anything for the first time in a long time and it was *amazing.* And I mean, not actually doing nothing, but doing simple quiet things I wanted to do, like sewing for a million years and watching all the "Law and Order: SVU," eating at Bluephies twice, and chilling with my "peeps," as it were.

Last week I went over to [livejournal.com profile] sail_aweigh's house so we could punchspire each other into working on our STBBs, and it helped, so I'm going over again tonight. I would really like to get to the climax of the story (I hope I hope) because I need to send it away to my beta and give my artist and mixer the heads up on the end and still have time to fix things/add things/MORE PORN THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE KIKIPUPS PORN aduhfskd/ etc.And then I can be allowed write terrible Steve/Harold crack because my roommate ruined my life.

I have almost finished my Erik and Charles dolls, which have involved a lot of shouting at Charles' hair and occasionally shrieking "WHY DO I DO THIS" as I embroidered tiny faux zippers onto tiny legs. My plan is to use them to launch a doll commissions post, and honestly, I think they've turned out pretty great. >.> Ahem.

And uh...I've gotten pretty good at making chicken marsala, which I did with [livejournal.com profile] infinityduck last night. And my mom got me a beautiful sweatshirt I was pining for as an early early Christmas present and it is full of softness and beauty and did not come out of a dumpster like most of my recent "new" clothes. So that's cool too.

I think I may need to try to semi unclog the toilet in the store bathroom, but I'm biding my time on that, hoping it'll fix itself. Ah, my job.

2011-10-19 10:20 am

I was tied to a post all night and left my flashlight on

In conclusion, [livejournal.com profile] monkeybobert's wedding was lovely and sweet, and she looked amazing and I kind of looked a bit Mad Men-esque with poofy fancy hair that somehow survived the completely insane wind that made all of our outside pictures...interesting. And I finally figured out what to say.

Saturday night I faced one of my biggest fears when I got magically sick from something (probably some strange perfect storm combination of wedding food, more red wine than I usually drink, stress, and earlier in the week stomach evils) and survived. You may laugh, but seriously, I have spent at least 20 years being afraid that the culmination of nausea would somehow negate the entirety of my life prior to that point. Which it apparently didn't, although it was still somewhat psychologically scarring. My mom was all "Look, you didn't die! :D" And I am staying away from red wine and wedding buffets from now on.

And now, after a month of moving my store and working all the time, having guests, and doing wedding things, my life returns to relative normal, and I actually don't have anything I really need to do. Uh, except STBB. >.> Yeah.

Anyway, I have a backlog of delicious memes that I've been wanting to do, so MEMETIME STARTS NOW GO.

From [livejournal.com profile] robley:

-it is [livejournal.com profile] monkeybobert's wedding day
-I am about to get my hair professionally done for the first time
-I need to choose between three pairs of shoes

Tomorrow I might actually write things. Or put away my clothes. Who knows, the world is mine.

I have two mouths (No I haven't)

OH INTERNET

I'VE BEEN SO BAD AT YOU. Today is the first day since we opened the new store on Sept. 30 that we actually have internet at the front. I never realized how much time I spent on LJ and poking at the webs at my job in the morning until I didn't have the chance. And in the evenings there has been much to do since [livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces has been gracing us with her starry presence, being adorable and charming and much more clever than all of us. She was really sick for the first few days, which was sad, but I totally fixed her by making poutine. No really. Okay well I tried.

I have so much to say but I feel like I'm always throwing massive walls of text at people, so I've broken it up into handy subsections.

And I think that's it! I will try to be better at things, and eventually post pictures of [livejournal.com profile] starsandgraces punching me to remind myself I need to write and stuff.

Now to stare at the walls at my job and try to put off going to the happiness coffee shop of wonder upstairs for a little longer.

Everything right is wrong again

So many things about this move are being handled so badly I can't even begin to explain it, nor does anyone really want to hear it. Just know that my store is supposed to open again in 24 hours with 60% of its current space and at least two sections still in location waiting to be packed, shelves missing, the counter not entirely built, no computer system, and yesterday most of our employees didn't show up until 5.

To give you a small visual reference, here is the anime section:

8 boxes, 3 cubic feet each.

Anime is actually one of our smaller sections.

I can't even.

Oh, and today it's raining. :)

I'm sorry for all these posts no one cares about, I just feel like documenting my boss' complete and utter devolution into total insanity. Also I need this for any time I start to think, "maybe my job isn't so stupid."

I'm just gonna go take some ibuprofen and go back to work now. I hope everyone else has an amazing day.

At the mountains of madness

Be right back, just about to move 25 years and 25,000 movies of a store.

Also, L'SHANAH TOVAH to my Jewish peeps! I may be early, but I'm not sure when I'll be near a computer and not braindead for a while. ;)
