Mark to market

AND SO YOU SEE.

I have finally finished the Loki doll I was working on for [livejournal.com profile] jou, and because he's probably my most fabulous creation to date I present him now

Regular Loki!

Loki with hat!

And now I have some questions for you all! I'd like to open my etsy shop and start taking doll commissions, but I'm very bad at pricing my goods, so I wanted to offer this poll. If you could just take a moment to throw in your input, that would be awesome.

[Poll #1802525]

Thank you for your help! :D

Aww, he's cute. I love his little helmet. (I should watch "Thor" shouldn't I?)

THAT HAT.

Don't sell your time short. Time is valuable and you're spending a lot working on these.

I'd look at Deadly Sweet's pricing. Although she's on holiday break right now. But her pricing should give you an idea of where you should be.

I'm likely not a representative case, because of the stingy and all.

I'm not a follower of these fandoms, and so price isn't really the deciding factor for me. However, for a doll of this type, I would pay in the $10 - $15 range.

On an unrelated note, I really admire the stitching on the Loki armor and hat.

another way to think of it is an hourly wage. Would you pay yourself less than minimum wage?

AT LEAST $30 FOR LOKI THAT HAT WAS NOT A SMALL TASK.

That HAT. AND HIS HAIR. And the stitching!.

So, I put $15 for the X-Men (each) & $20 for Loki, but upon further consideration, I would think more like $20 (each) for Charlie & E, and maybe $35 for the pair? And then $25 or $30 for the Loki, since he comes with a removable hat that is adoraballs.

Also, putting on my economist hat, it's been shown that:

A) Most people will naturally round up or down to the closest number ending in 5 or 0, so if you price at $21, people will just think of that as $20, and buy at nearly the same rate they would if it actually were $20. Same thing with $24 (i.e. people will think of that as $25), but that'd hurt you, not help you.

B) People generally don't consider shipping prices as much as they should in their buy-or-not-buy calculations. So more people will buy an item that is priced at $10 with $3 shipping than will buy an item that is priced at $12 with $1 shipping.

Those are so adorable. <3

eta: and I would do $10-15 for a basic figure as you start out, going up in increments of $5 based on complexity.

I think you should definitely ask more for Loki, since you provided removable accessories for him. Since I said $20 for the Erik/Charles dolls, I'd go at least $25 for Loki, maybe $29. People always thing they're getting a better deal if something ends in 4 or 9; because they round up in their minds, anything less is a bargain to them. Keep away from anything ending in 0 or 5; make it $19, $24, $29, etc.

You maybe should. It's not brilliant, but it's fun. Or fun-themed. ;)

THAT HAT IS MY FAVORITE PART, I'LL BE HONEST.

*makes all the tiny hats*

Thank you so much. I really need to talk to you about this at length, actually, because you're the first person who came to mind when I was wondering about this, and also because...honestly seeing this comment made me feel a lot better on a day when I was getting very frustrated about what my own stuff might be worth.

I so appreciate it. ;_;

[identity profile] maypirate.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs*

The hat was kind of my favorite part, actually. I dunno, I enjoyed Loki much more than Erik and Charles, even though in the long run I got a lot scarier about his years of "embroidery."

[identity profile] maypirate.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, I'm glad you like him! Maybe if you're a good girl this year... :p

Someday I'm gonna try an Asuka. But that's gonna take some mental preparation.

YOU ARE AMAZING AND YOUR ADVICE IS SAVED FOR POSTERITY.

[identity profile] maypirate.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
These are good plans. I sort of had something like that in mind but uh...typed the wrong thing I guess. I'm great at stuff like that. :F

Thanks so much for your input, Ellen. I must rethink my business plans and this is definitely going to help me. <3
