"Thunderstorms" is an Elricest fic bykaltia that has never once failed to make my heart clench, no matter how many times I've read it. A decade after Al's restoration, with Al and Roy in a long-term relationship, the younger Elric begins to ponder the increasingly distant and dismal nature of his sibling, and seeks out the reason behind it.
It is, of course, much different than he'd imagined.
It's a gorgeous story, perfectly written by an excellent writer, and it is one of my very favorite stories ever.

The start of the story, strong at the beginning with Al and Roy's relationship, fading to rain and more somber tones as Ed comes into the picture. He is and always has been a background in their romance.

But it's not funny anymore...

When Ed comes home from his latest mission, Al worries about his brother, but Ed brushes him off. Their closeness seems to have fallen away.

A song for Roy and Al as Al prepares for Ed's birthday and they consider the older Elric.
4. Doughnut Song - Tori Amos
Blood can be pretty
Like a delicate man
Copper to steel to a hinge that is faltered

And if I'm hanging on to your shade

Meanwhile, Ed is miserable, alone, and needing his brother more than he feels he can ever freely tell him.

I must admit I saw it coming
The air between us had gotten harder yet to breathe.
I'd run away if I could help it...

Yet I'm starting to resent your smile
Because it's killing me to say this,

Al comes to Ed's dorm to celebrate his birthday, and though Ed carefully avoids any possible contact, any chance to spill his desire, he accidentally lets it out when Al pulls him into a hug. Ed kisses his brother...and Al runs away.
6. With or Without You - Utada Hikaru
I can't live with or without you.
Returning home to Roy, Al is digusted, upset, unsettled, completely confused and decides to sit on the matter until Ed returns from his next trip. Unfortunately, Ed has collapsed in front of his new commanding officer, and needs Al once more.
7. Sadame (Piano Version) - Satou Naoki
Al visits Ed in the hospital, apologizes, and comes to a final decision about the situation.
8. Flying High - Jem
I know there's no such thing
As painless love
well it'll catch us up
and we can never win
But ohhh
I feel so alive...
Al and Ed spend a night alone.
9. Lullabye for a Stormy Night - Vienna Teng
well now I am grown
and these years have shown
that rain's a part of how life goes
but it's dark and it's late
so I'll hold you and wait
'til your frightened eyes do close
and I hope that you'll know...
