Point of order
Mar. 6th, 2007 01:01 pmThe most interesting thing I learned from this 400+ page book: the etymology of the word "boondock."
"The term, originally bundok, a Tagalog word for mountain or remote area, was brought into U.S. consciousness by soldiers returning from guerilla war, layered with connotations of bewilderment and confusion. The existence of this term -for a liminal, border region- tells us something about the history that followed. The word crossed over into American English at the very moment that Philippine and U.S. histories became inexorably internal to each other. Its very presence in English suggests, in brief, precisely why neither Philippine nor U.S. history can afford to conceive of the other as boondocks, as marginal to their core concerns."
So um...Boondocks = from Tagalog = mountains, remote region = remote region = ends of civilization = edges of what is considered civilized areas = uncivilized areas = ghetto-ish regions = Southie!
Who's envisioning the Saints in South East Asian right now? Or is it just me? :D
Anyway, I just thought that was fascinating.
WHY NO, I HAVEN'T COMPLETED A SINGLE PAGE, WHY DO YOU ASK? I'M LEARNING. I'M LEARNING SO HARD.

Date: 2007-03-07 11:06 am (UTC)Though I have read, waaaay back, that the Colt .45 gun was invented in order to shoot down Filipino fighters who resisted the U.S.'s rule after Spain handed the islands over. News? Yes/no? I think it's true, but...
