Blessed are those who wear headphones
Sep. 18th, 2007 09:35 amI have a favor to ask of all you zany people out there in the internet world.
Right now, I'm in a phase where I hate almost all my music. I have 1400 songs on my MP3 player, and I probably can stand to listen to about 1/5 of them. Aside from the awesomeness that is Emilie Autumn (who I've known about for a while, and whose stuff I'm slowly working through), I haven't had a song solidly kick my ass since earlier in the summer with Rob Dougan's "Furious Angels."
Oh flist, mighty flist, what secrets of music can you reveal to me?
Please for to rec to me/post at me/suggest what you're into right now, what you were into last year, something that punches you in the face with rockingness every time you hear it.
Have you never commented to me before? What care I! Hit me with your best stuff, y'allz, the only sound I have right now is my computer's fan dying its long slow death.

Date: 2007-09-18 02:28 pm (UTC)My number one "you need to listen to this" recommendation would be The Spiral Eyes by Peter Adams. Who is Peter Adams? Well, do you remember Jacob Adams from Oberlin? Come to think it, you might not- he was in PA the year you were in Japan. Anyway, this is his brother, and he's phenomenal. Download this album from iTunes right now.
Next, another ex-Obie, although you might have heard of this one: Josh Ritter. If you want to get your ass kicked by a song, try either "Girl in the War" or "Thin Blue Flame."
Josh Ritter provides a good segue into my next universal recommendation: The Frames. They're a band from Ireland who've helped Ritter in his ascent, and they're really good. If you ever saw Mark's band, The Hip Abduction, play, they covered a few Frames songs. For the Birds and The Cost are some good albums.
Finally, some less-obscure choices. Barenaked Ladies have put out a couple of discs in the past year, Barenaked Ladies are Me, and Barenaked Ladies are Men. They're worth a listen; in a pinch, I'd go with the former album. And if you've never heard it, their album Everything to Everyone is fantastic.
Don't know if you're into Wilco at all, but their recently-released Sky Blue Sky is good stuff, even though Volkswagen is using it to shill their cars.
You've definitely heard of Paul Simon. His latest record, Surprise, is a lot different from anything he's done before, so I recommend it if you're in the mood for a change.
And finally, if you want something a little different that doesn't come with lyrics, pick up Law, by Cougar.

Date: 2007-09-18 02:32 pm (UTC)Off of Living in America I like "Seven Days a Week", "Dance With Me", and "Hit Me" best.
Off of Dying to Say This To You my favorite is "Queen of Apologys" and "Painted By Numbers" but "Night After Night" and "Running Out Of Turbo" are great too. I like both albums a lot.
Jimmy Eat World is always fantastic to me.
Cocteau Twins and Violet Indiana are two bands I recently found through FST and like. Especially "Killer Eyes" by Violet Indiana.
Most everything else I listen you already know of and listen to. ^^

Date: 2007-09-18 02:58 pm (UTC)Any Game OST in which Yasunori Mitsuda had a hand:
Specifically Xenogears, Xenogears: Creid, Xenosaga 1, and Chrono Cross.
The OST from the Hellsing TV series, not the OVA. You may like or dislike the show, but the music is awesome.
Music by Lily Allen. Highly acidic poppish music. I was surprised by it.
Anyway,hope this finds you well.

Date: 2007-09-18 03:21 pm (UTC)This summer I also got into:
- Yoshida Brothers (ANYTHING. w/ and w/o Monkey Majik)
- Sara Bareilles (song recs: Fairytale, Come Round Soon, Love Song)
- Noisettes (song recs: The Count of Monte Christo, Sister Rosetta (Capture the Spirit))
- The new Shiina Ringo album, 平成風俗 (song recs: ギャンブル, この世の限り, パパイヤマンゴー)
All of these, save for Monkey Majik and Shiina, can be sampled and/or bought on iTunes. I've also really been digging Eminence ever since Otakon, but you'll probably have a hard time finding it... well then again, maybe not since it's game music.
Also L'Arc~en~Ciel's SEVENTH HEAVEN has yet to not make me want to get up and dance to it. And ever since the Ishida Yoko concert I've been listening to her stuff a lot more too.
Last year I got into:
- m-flo (which I still am, but just not as much)
- ELLEGARDEN
- ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION
- Lucy Woodward
- O.A.R.
- Ken Oaks

Date: 2007-09-18 04:49 pm (UTC)Mix CD 2!, if that gives you any hint. XD
The crack my muses are on. Always necessary for writing material. XD
The only thing recommending them to you is that they still slay me, listening to them so many years later. Hope you find something you like.

Date: 2007-09-18 09:33 pm (UTC)These are things I listened too this morning:
Smashing Pumpkins - "Stellar" - I don't have words for how much I love this song.
Cochteua Twins - Frou Frou Foxes in Midsummer - This is haunting and beautiful and THEORETICALLY in English :) In truth I have never parsed a single word.
DJ Sammy - "Beautiful" -- I think about love and loss a lot to this song.

Date: 2007-09-19 04:28 am (UTC)I Am A Tree by Guided By Voices
(The guitar line at the beginning caused me to fall in love with this song instantly. It does not let up.)
The Peacock Song by Bif Naked
(Almost anything by Bif Naked, really, but this is the one that I inevitably end up singing under my breath at weird moments, such as when I am weeding the driveway.)
Beautiful World by Utada Hikaru
(If you like the theme for KHII, you should like this? It's the new theme for the EVA movie and I've been abusing it terribly lately.)
And for sheer cheer-you-up insanely-silly awesomeness, nothing so far beats The Aquabats (who are native English speakers and yet write songs with titles like "Powdered Milk Man", "My Skateboard", and "Lobster Bucket"), and Elekibass (who are native Japanese speakers and therefore come up with songs like "Let's Brian", "Not To Be Taken Away", "David Matt", and "People Pack Into The Rock"). Both these bands have ska roots and transcend them magnificently into a new realm of BEING TOTALLY OFF THEIR COLLECTIVE NUT. It is wonderful.

Date: 2007-09-25 02:05 am (UTC)The horns are awesome.
For stuff a little sweeter, check The Way I Am by Ingrid Matheson, or I Quit My Job by Old Man Luedecke. Maybe When The Night Feels My Song by Bedouin Soundclash, who are kind of hot.
If you want to rock, try Wraith Pinned To The Mist by of Montreal. Okay, that isn't really rock. So try Fitted Shirt by Spoon. Or the acoustic version of No Doubt's Hella Good? Le sigh. You've Got Your Bones To Make A Beat by Cloud Cult. And Jealous Of Your Cigarette by Hawksley Workman.
On the other hand, if you want something a little sexier, I like Slow Like Honey by Fiona Apple. You Can Leave Your Hat On by Etta James. Or Dinah Washington's Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby the Rae and Christian remix is so hot.
I have most of these on mp3 if you require.
