Just so it's out there - and I should have put it out sooner but - Oni is okay.
And I was right, there was something wrong with her teeth and it was making it difficult/painful/almost impossible for her to eat, but the vets (a different vet that is good with little animal teeths) put her under and took care of the problem. She also had a swelling in her abdomen that vanished while she was under, and since it doesn't seem that something has horribly ruptured in her, the vet said it was probably some trapped gas.
So everyone if you wouldn't mind keeping your fingers crossed that it was just that. But they watched her for several hours and I took her home where she was already zipping under the table and eating grass and purring.
Oh she must have been so hungry. My poor pig!
And so I am proud of myself (and my parents, who had to deal with me calling and crying at them at 1 am last night) for trusting my instincts and taking her back to a doctor. I know my pig.
And I love my pig.
And now tonight I think we'll both sleep better.

Date: 2008-09-24 08:19 am (UTC)Not nearly as emotionally involving, but I have the same problem with my car. I drive my car pretty much every day. I spend a lot of time in my car. I know what it sounds and feels like and I know when something's wrong. But it's sometimes hard to assert that to the mechanic who's telling me it's just fine. Good for you for sticking it out.

Date: 2008-09-24 08:44 pm (UTC)In terms of the future, did the vet say that since this abnormality with her teeth occurred once that it might happen again? Also, I invested in a tiny digital kitchen scale, and I weigh my boys once a week and keep a chart to notice problems. Theoretically, the vet you go to can weigh them without having an appointment and whatnot, but I like knowing that it's there for me. Finally, if you haven't already on the suggestion of the vet, perhaps you should ask about Oxbow's Critical Care? It's a powder to be mixed with water to make a mush and you can syringe feed a non eating piggy. If nothing else, having it on hand should ease some of your anxiety in case she can't eat solid foods again.
But for now, be well and carefree Oni! This good outcome calls for a treat!
