So last Friday I went to New York for my friend Megan's bachelorette party, which I wasn't terribly looking forward to, since my idea of fun is pretty much the opposite of going to bars and I have a difficult relationship with New York for a number of reasons.

Friday after I arrived we walked down to Bryant Park, and Megan indulged my impulses to go to Kinokuniya, where I got some manga for [livejournal.com profile] caffeaffogato and the Kirino Natsuo novel I've been meaning to steal from my mom for a while. Then we had a crazy ice cream sandwich, got patronizing looks while trying to buy sake, and Josh made an excellent dinner and we watched SVU. And then Jennie arrived, which was exciting because you know...after not seeing her for five years, suddenly I saw her twice in a month!

Saturday we decided to walk to the new Highline Park, and I opted to wear a dress because they were wearing dresses, but I made a poor shoe choice, as despite normally being comfortable, my sandals are apparently not meant for walking 40-plus blocks in 85 degree weather. So I awesomely got a blister on the ball of my foot before the heavy-duty shoe adventure even began.

From left is Megan, Jennie, et me.

New York: Lost on Amber.

Anyway, we went back to the apartment, did some foot soaking...

People began to arrive, Catherine did my makeup, I put on some heels and...

For dinner, we went to Butter, which is a very nice restaurant (and was apparently mentioned on Gossip Girl), but better than I expected in that I was worried it was going to be full of sharp angles and avant-garde food like half a grapefruit and some raw chicken that had been slapped by a fancy chef. While there I did the first shot of my life, which was a "lemon drop" and I don't know what that is and apparently it's some kind of big deal that I'm 27 and had never done a shot, regardless of the whole "living abroad" and my degrees and stuff. Whatever, so now I'm a big girl.

Jessie and Elliot, the planners, made up a list of challenges for Megan to do in order to go to bars of varying degrees of niceness, and the rest of the night included the following events: watching every body else drink, fondling gay exotic dancers in the most blase manner possible, sitting in a fratty bar at 1 am trying to think of who I could text, getting drunk people water and making sure they didn't fall down stairs, and providing endless dry commentary. Catherine also had an exciting emotional breakdown like something out of a movie, and I made a game out of not taking off my shoes because as much as they hurt, I knew if I took them off I'd never be able to put them back on.

The addition to these pictures is Catherine, of the wedding earlier this month. I'm not a fan of my demon eyes and teethyteeth in this picture. Whatever. :F Vanitas vanitatum.

We got back at 4:30, I did not drink, and was ultimately jealous of [livejournal.com profile] jou and [livejournal.com profile] infinityduck and Chenya who had gotten to spend the night in my living room watching movies. But the enjoyment of social interaction in bars is completely and utterly lost on me.

I also felt kind of...I dunno, not frumpy, exactly, but kind of uncultured and weird among her law school friends. But I guess they're so logical and they live in big cities and I'm much more... me. I worried about seeming not-smart, but it's not like anyone tried to make me think that, I did it to myself. I just felt out of place, I guess.

The point, though, is that Megan had a really good time, and it was important to her. And as much as I complain about it, that I could do it for her mattered to me. And it did make me realize just how many people Megan knows, and how special it is that out of all her extraordinary friends, she picked me to be her maid of honor.

And as for Sunday, we looked at pictures and then I went home.

And if you're interested, I did like really one of the bars: The Park. If all bars were like that -pretty, with no need to shout- I'd be much more inclined to go to them.

If I get married, my bachelorette party will like...involve pizza rolls and a movie or something.

And that's my wordy story. I left out the wang-headband and various accessories, but they're really just minor additions. Now I spend my life tending my feet, eating cornbread, and listening to the construction outside. I'm going to an art group thing tonight, so I might actually draw some shit for Otakon, but...we'll see if that happens.

I kind of want to watch old beach-party movies, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's that the weather has been so ridiculously beautiful the past few days.

I don't think I have two days off in a row for another two weeks. Oh gracious.

I would totally go to your bachelorette party if that's what you would be doing. Shoot, I would go no matter what if you invited me, but that idea sounds nice.

I want to go to your bachelorette party. Can there be dairy-free pizza rolls?

Oddly enough, I also spent Saturday at a bar for a bachelorette party. It was also supposed to be in NYC, which I said I wouldn't go to, but then she changed it to Boston last minute and I had no excuse. I hadn't realized yours was also in NYC...I would have gone and tried to navigate us toward you so you and I could be not-drinking-much together. I was thinking of you. I have never done a shot. You are more grown up than I.

That sucks about no days off. But I'm coming home this weekend so I hope you have some time. I MISS YOOUUU!!
