So it's 1:30 and I tried to go to bed like two hours ago but I couldn't fall asleep and I'm wondering if I've hit some kind of post-tired awake-groove or if the tea latte I had almost seven hours ago is to blame. Which is not acceptable, because I am Amber Sleepsanywhere, who once fell asleep after consuming a latte with four shots of espresso at Otakon. Dammit.

I've been seeing posts talking about "Ship Olympics" or [livejournal.com profile] st_reboot or whatever it's called so I went and looked at the comm and then wibbled for a while about how "not sure if want" because on the one hand, deadlines and prompts tend to go badly for me and considering the state of my creativity now, I think it would be incredibly stressful and make me feel terrible. But on the other hand...more kikipups Kirk/Sulu and the chance to meet and greet other people of that persuasion and REPRESENT. But then we go back to that first hand and I know it's a terrible idea, so basically it's ended up being me staring at the comm thinking about eating my own hands.

I've started stockpiling memes, since I can't seem to turn my brain off, so I took this one on...me and the passage of time, I guess, from [livejournal.com profile] inugrlrayn:

TEN YEARS AGO I
1. Started dating the person I would continue to be with for the next seven years.
2. Graduated from high school and proceeded on to Oberlin College.
3. Had my first real bout of depression, although I didn't know it at the time.
4. Met Rebecca, and through her, most of the people who would define my college experience, then two weeks later traveled 300 miles on a bus with them to see a Weezer concert.
5. Lived away from home for the first time, and outside of Wisconsin for the first time since I was cognizant.

FIVE YEARS AGO I
1. Had been working at Four Star for less than a year and thought it was the greatest job anyone could ever ask for.
2. Was utterly enamored with FMA and spent hours and most evenings until very early in the morning talking to people I'd met in the fandom and writing a million fics.
3. Applied to grad schools and got into one of them twice.
4. Went to Japan for what would be the last time in many years (I haven't been back yet).
5. Drove myself and [livejournal.com profile] monkeybobert to Virginia so I could go to grad school, and my fate unfurled.

TWO YEARS AGO I
1. Was starting to realize that I needed to get out of Four Star, but didn't know how to do it or where to go.
2. Joined OkStupid on whim because of [livejournal.com profile] jou, and proceeded to meet the guy who would eventually become my boyfriend.
3. Got involved with Star Trek, which no one saw coming, least of all me.
4. Sold buttons at Otakon for the first time - it didn't go so well.
5. Was the maid-of-honor (more or less) at [livejournal.com profile] caffeaffogato's wedding.

ONE YEAR AGO I
1. Celebrated one year with that crazy guy from OkStupid.
2. Became even more certain that I needed to leave Four Star and continued to drag my feet like a jerk.
3. Tricked [livejournal.com profile] jou into moving to Wisconsin (although she'll tell you it was her own decision).
4. Watched the Oscars and was lamely butthurt that "Public Enemies" wasn't nominated for anything.
5. Went to Nashville for the first time.

YESTERDAY I
1. Went to work
2. Went to Yoga
3. Called Megan
4. Ate some macaroni and cheese
5. Didn't do the dishes and instead started reading "John Dies at the End" which is compelling and yet perplexing.

TODAY I
1. Got to work an hour early to no adulation
2. Watched another protest parade up State Street
3. Convinced [livejournal.com profile] infinityduck that I desperately needed pizza
4. Went to Starbinx with [livejournal.com profile] infinityduck and did some job searching, ultimately applying for a job I'd been toying with for a year.
5. Thought falling asleep would be easy.

TOMORROW I WILL
1. Go to work wow!!
2. Try to convince myself to go to the gym
3. Probably be really damn tired
4. Perhaps go over to my parents' house to steal food and do laundry (and now my mother is forewarned)
5. Change the piggy fleece

FIVE THINGS I CANT LIVE WITHOUT
1. My friends and family
2. Guinea pigs
3. My computer and, ideally, the interwebs
4. MST3K and X-Files
5. Books

FIVE THINGS I WOULD BUY WITH $1,000
1. Sadly, I'd really just pay bills
2. More of the books I always want and never get around to reading
3. Plane tickets to exciting places
4. Another pair of addidas
5. Dinner at a really awesome restaurant

FIVE BAD HABITS I HAVE
1. Not getting my dishes done even though it drives me crazy to see my kitchen in such a state
2. Really sucking at emailing/calling people back
3. Not putting away my laundry
4. Going out for a soda or coffee shop drink during work just so I can spend like 5 minutes away from the madness.
5. Not getting up early enough to get to work early so I could leave early.

FIVE SHOWS I LIKE (that are on tv now)
1. Mad Men
2. The Closer
3. ....X-FILES IS ALWAYS ON IN MY HOUSE WUT
4. SAME WITH MST3K
5. I don't have channels on my TV, that costs money.

FIVE PLACES I'VE LIVED
1. Poughkeepsie, NY
2. Madison, WI
3. Oberlin, OH
4. Kyoto, Japan
5. Williamsburg, VA

Nicky was being a giant fluffy staring machine in the corner of the cage and I went over to pet her and now I feel bad for disturbing her. I'm gonna go eat some saltines.

I totally could not do this meme, because I would feel way young.

kikipups what XDD. And! I say go for Ship Olympics, because the Kirk/Sulu team will be rockin' and it's a pretty relaxed challenge - you can drop out any time, etc. :3

Yeah dude, I remember with great detail the year you were born. I'm one of those people now.

So uh...kikipups. Yeah. Basically...sometime in the fall, I read drabble or something wherein Jim called Sulu "Kiki," decided that was hilarious, and in a magical world that I share with [livejournal.com profile] jou, we adopted that, so Jim's nickname for Sulu is "Kiki" and Sulu's nickname for Jim is "Pups." And since then, "kikipups" has been our self-appointed port-manteau for Kirk/Sulu. :F Ta-daaah.

And stop trying to trick me into this shiplympics! ;;_;; I am very easily persuaded but I don't want to let anyone down!

THAT IS SO CUTE, OMG. Sulu calling Kirk "Pups" is just. Beyond belief adorable. (How'd he come up with that? XD) I think I'll have to adopt that from you guys.

COME OOOOON! Our team will be awesomeeee. And like I said, you can drop out if you need tooo~

Ehh, I participated in Ship Wars for a time last year and did not find it satisfying or fun at all. Maybe Ship Olympics will be better, but I'm bowing out entirely this year. I just don't have the time and energy to invest, despite my past and current yearnings to lead some sort of Kirk/Sulu revolution. ;)

kdhfvksdjjsk thank you so much for saying this, because honestly, I have not heard anything ever about ship wars/whatever that wasn't "oh this is the best fun ever and you're totally missing out and every day is like cake."

So I really appreciate the alternate viewpoint, and it makes me feel a little better for not wanting to be involved. Considering my great writerly angst, I feel like it would just be incredibly stressful.

I would like to support your Kirk/Sulu revolution and join if possible. Do you have any literature?

Maybe I didn't like it as much because I joined later on, after the initial squee-fest, but yeah, it just seemed really forced to me. Also, I just did NOT have the time or desire to comment on every single thing I read. Nor did I like everything that ended up being chosen to represent my team. So, eh. I'll just stick to my corner this time around.

Yes, I have a brochure on the subject matter, and it is called GOLDBONER.

Yeah, considering I'm a pretty horrid commenter in general (except when I manage to creep out of my cave) I would probably be pretty bad at it. If there is space in your corner, I may sit there too. I'll bring my own pillow.

I'll take several brochures if possible, I'd like to pass them around and/or staple them to my face.

It's a good show. It starts off slowly, but it's absolutely compelling, and the writing and acting are just stellar.

I salute you in your not doing Ship Olympics as I too shun things like ship wars and whatever. I just like...I don't see the point. People ship what they ship, why does it have to be a competition? It just takes the fun out of it for me.

It's supposed to be a "fun for everyone woo shipping yay" sort of thing, but I was wary when I first heard about it and I'm still wary.

Maybe I just have such endless dark connotations from went "pairing war" meant actual "pairing war" with angry words.

I participated in one round of ship wars last year and then basically dropped out because it was too hectic, I was too busy with RL stuff, and I did not have the time/energy/inclination to read/write/comment on all the challenges. It was just...overwhelming. I'm not signing up for Ship Olympics because I have a hard enough time finishing solitary challenge fics that I just can't commit to something that lasts for several rounds.

I AM TOTES STEALING THIS MEME. Looking back on the years like this is kinda crazy. Also, I left laundry hanging on my drying rack for THREE DAYS before I finally gave in and folded it up, so I feel you on that, bb.

time/energy/inclination to read/write/comment on all the challenges.

Yeah I rarely have the energy to do that in general, to be honest. :F

I have a hard enough time finishing solitary challenge fics that I just can't commit to something that lasts for several rounds.

God, yes, that's my really big thing. You've seen how miserable I make myself over writing, and I can see myself backing myself into a corner of fear, being uninspired by prompts, not being able to write anything... on the whole I think it would just be incredibly stressful for me.

And yet the lure of other Kirk/Sulu people is tempting... >.>

But really, thanks for your input. Honestly last year I never heard/saw anything except about how ship wars was the most fun anyone had ever had doing anything, and I felt left out. But hey, I feel left out of fandom stuff a lot of the time, so I should really just get used to it. :p

Yeah... as a 'Captain' in last year's Ship Wars I was pretty heavily involved. It happened at a good time for me, as I was unemployed and had the time to devote to all the duties being an admin in Ship Wars entailed...and depending on what team you were on and how big it was (some teams had literally 6 people, others had dozens), a normal team member's time commitment varied. On my own team (Spock/Bones) each member just had to show up at some point and cheerlead, and commit to submitting just one fic for the entire SW. Some people didn't even have to do that if their talents didn't lie in the writing/art categories. (As Captain I felt obligated to submit fic for *every* prompt, ye gods.)

I won't say that I didn't have fun. I did. tbh a lot of the admin got tired of higher-up behind-the-scenes shenanigans and that pretty much sucked all the fun out of it for me and for others I talked to. My own personal burning out of writing was only exacerbated by SW, not necessarily wholly to blame for it. However, if you have difficulty with producing on a schedule or setting aside the sheer amount of time that requires (which, again, depends on your team)...then maybe it's advisable to avoid it altogether. *shrug* I don't know how this new one is set up, or who will be running it, but I'm staying out this year. Too much IRL stuff, and too tired.

As a side note, I believe there weren't enough people to sign up for a Kirk/Sulu team during SW, or no one stepped forward to captain the team. Part of the problem was that K/Sulu is not usually a person's primary ship -- it's the second or third. So the shippers got claimed for other teams (like Kirk/Bones) and no K/Sulu.

Thanks for your input! I remember you being a captain last year and looking at your posts and being like "am I missing the greatest thing ever?" so it's great to hear your input.

However, if you have difficulty with producing on a schedule or setting aside the sheer amount of time that requires...then maybe it's advisable to avoid it altogether. *shrug*

HEY THAT'S ME! ...oh. :F Whoop!

Part of the problem was that K/Sulu is not usually a person's primary ship -- it's the second or third.

Well uh...it is technically my second ship, but it's really become my primary one. :F Even though I continue to read lots of Kirk/McCoy simply because there is so much of it and I need fic like a fat kid needs cake.

.it is technically my second ship, but it's really become my primary one.

Things might be the same or different from last year :) but at the time the issue was finding enough writers actively writing K/Sulu to join or participate in the team...I seriously considered captaining a K/Sulu team last year, but didn't after realizing that might entail me basically carrying the team for each prompt with a team of like, two or three people. Some ships did that (like, McCoy/Chekov, if I remember right) but that required WAY more dedication than I could muster.
