I stopped playing Magic and/or buying the cards years ago, but some of the guys at work play so they've been looking through my cards and picking things out.

Just to check on a few things, I looked up some cards that used to be worth something on a trading site.

And oh, god. 4th Edition Shivan Dragon used to be worth $20. TWENTY FUCKING DOLLARS. And it's worth now? $.50.

For some reason that hurts me. Hurts me bad long time. These cards used to mean something!
I never loved the game so much as I loved the cards and I loved knowing they were worth something and mine, even if I never intended to sell them. I was crap at the game so having awesome cards was really my one strength.

I guess they cost less because they're back in rotation now? I suppose that's good or something.

But ow. How the mighty have fallen.

I don't know for certain, but I imagine that the cost reduction is do to either reprinting, a shift in game play, or them having been cycled out of the game. The whole magic ethos these days seems to be that only the last set and the current one are valid for tourney play, forcing people to buy more cards.
